Montgenèvre
Montgenèvre, where you can ski across an international border before you’ve even finished your morning croissant.
Tucked high in the French Alps and sharing slopes with Italy, this charming resort lures in an eclectic crowd: Brits loving how “continental” they feel ordering cappuccinos in Claviere, French locals who make carving down Rocher de l’Aigle look as easy as breathing, and Italians who pop across the border just to grab a proper coffee.
You'll see snowboarders stuck on a flat bit near the Chalmettes lift, all while a fearless crew of teenage freeskiers hucks flips in the snowpark.
We love the long, sunny runs that straddle two countries, the Monty Express luge for your daily dose of adrenaline, and lively après-ski at Le Graal, where dancing in ski boots is basically mandatory.
We're not so keen on getting so distracted by the jaw-dropping views that you miss your turn-off to Italy, or realising mid-piste that your language skills have merged into one big “Bonjourno!”
But, just enjoy the cross-boarder skiing and maybe maybe bring a phrasebook.
