Hinterthal, the snug little corner of the Hochkönig region where you half expect to see a fairy-tale princess ski by—until a pack of Brits in neon onesies zooms past shouting about “fresh pow!”

This peaceful Austrian village is a magnet for German families seeking “Gemütlichkeit,” snowboarders who claim the Gabühel lift’s flats are totally doable on one edge, and the occasional local who grew up carving perfect turns on the Hochmais run before they could walk.

Après-ski might not reach the “Ibiza-on-snow” decibel levels of bigger resorts, but you’ll still find plenty of cheer (and schnapps) at Tom’s Almhütte or Steinbockalm - just don’t expect to leave without a hearty rendition of an Alpine folksong. 

Just be careful as that “one more run” in Hinterthal can turn into a mini tour of the entire Hochkönig area before lunch.

We love the postcard-perfect views and inhaling enough strudel to fuel a downhill sprint back to the chalet.
