La Rosière, the sunny corner of the French Alps where you can ski to Italy for lunch and then panic when you realise you still have to make it back before the lifts close.

This friendly little resort is a magnet for international powder enthusiasts: Brits bringing along the entire family (and half their neighbours), Italians popping over from La Thuile for a quick espresso and some brusque overtaking, and French locals calmly weaving through everyone on the Fort Express like they own the place (because they do).

We love the cruisy blues like Tetras for your gentle warm-up, the thrill of hopping between two countries, and the essential après at La Grange, where you might just end up dancing in ski boots.

We're not so keen on dodging tiny ski-school prodigies who ski better than you ever will, that persistent alpine wind that tries to steal your beanie, and discovering that your “casual” off-piste shortcut leads you straight into a face-plant.

It's all part of the La Rosière charm—at least you can blame your wobbly legs on the altitude... and maybe a bit of grappa from Italy.
