Mayrhofen, the Zillertal gem where skiers and snowboarders from Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, and beyond line up at the Penkenbahn gondola like it’s opening night at a rock concert.

Cue the collective gasp when someone casually mentions “Harakiri”—the steepest groomed slope in Austria—like it’s no big deal, while the rest of us ponder whether our travel insurance covers sudden bouts of really bad ideas.

You’ve got snowboarders claiming the Vans Penken Park as their personal stage, families cruising down the Ahorn side for “friendly” afternoon runs, while the party crowd gather at the Ice Bar ready to belt out après-ski anthems over a pint (or four).

We love conquering (or at least surviving) that infamous Harakiri run and celebrating with a massive schnitzel. 

We're not so keen on the morning scrimmage to snag a coveted seat in the gondola and discovering that some Austrian reds are basically black runs in disguise. But hey, if you’re going to scream down a mountain, you might as well do it in style and Mayrhofen certainly has that in buckets.
